How Long Are Driving Lessons, and How Many Hours Do You Need?

Every lesson at 1 ACT Driving Schools is exactly two hours - lessons cannot be booked shorter than that. How many total hours you need depends on your experience level, not a fixed rule:

Complete beginners: 12–14 hours
Teens with regular parent practice: 8–10 hours
Adults with prior driving experience: 6–8 hours
Nervous or anxious drivers: 14+ hours

Georgia's Joshua's Law sets a legal floor of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction for teens completing Driver's Education - but 6 hours is the legal minimum, not the recommended standard. Most families add hours based on how ready their teen feels, and our instructors can help you gauge that after the first lesson.

We understand that schedules change. Here’s what you need to know before your lesson
Cancellations must be made more than 48 hours before your scheduled lesson at no charge.
Cancellations made within 48 hours will incur a late cancellation fee of $60.
Cancellation within 1 hour, no-shows and early terminations on behalf of the student will result in the loss of that session with no refund.

How much do driving lessons cost at 1 ACT in Atlanta?

How many driving lesson hours do I need to get my license in Georgia?

It depends on your experience level and age. As a general guide: complete beginners typically need 12–14 hours; teens with regular practice with a parent need 8–10 hours; adults with some prior experience need 6–8 hours; anxious or nervous drivers often benefit from 14+ hours. Our instructors will advise after your first lesson.

Is behind-the-wheel training required for Joshua’s Law?

Yes. Georgia’s Joshua’s Law requires teens aged 16–17 to complete at least 6 hours of BTW lessons with a DDS-certified school in addition to the 30-hour Driver’s Ed course. We offer both - bundle them and the course fee drops to $100.

What is the minimum age to start driving lessons in Georgia?

Can I take driving lessons if I don’t own a car?

Yes. All lessons are conducted in our insured vehicle - you don’t need your own car. Our instructor picks you up, conducts the lesson, and drops you off near any of our 7 locations.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my lesson?

Do your instructors come to me, or do I go to a location?

We come to you. Our instructors pick up and drop off in nearby areas of each of our 7 locations. You can also request to meet your instructor at one of our offices if you prefer.

Are lessons one-on-one?

Yes. Every lesson is one-on-one with your certified instructor. Friends and parents/guardians are not able to ride along during the lesson.

Can lessons be shorter than 2 hours?

No - all lessons are exactly 2 hours. They cannot be shorter or longer than that.

Are your instructors DDS-certified and background-checked?

Yes. All 1 ACT instructors are required to be certified by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. They have also passed a background check and drug screening before working with students.

What is taught during lessons?

Lessons cover parking and parallel parking, controlled turns, major intersection crossings, lane changes and merging, highway and freeway driving, blind-spot awareness, following distance, and safe responses to real traffic conditions. Lesson content is adapted to your current skill level.
