A DUI conviction in Georgia triggers a mandatory two-part program before your license can be reinstated – and knowing each step makes the whole process far less overwhelming.

Most first-time offenders feel like they’re navigating blind after a charge. The reality is that the process is structured, clearly defined, and entirely manageable once you know what to expect.

Here’s exactly what happens – from arrest to certificate.

Who Is Required to Complete the DUI Risk Reduction Program?

Georgia law mandates the DUI Risk Reduction Program (also called the Risk Reduction Program, or RRP) for anyone convicted of:

  • Driving Under the Influence (DUI)
  • Boating Under the Influence (BUI)
  • Possession of illegal drugs
  • Underage possession of alcohol or drugs while operating a motor vehicle

Completion is required by the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) as a condition of license reinstatement.

It’s not a punishment designed to shame you. It’s a DDS-certified intervention program – built to give you real information and practical tools going forward.

What Are the Two Parts of the Program?

The program has exactly two components, and they must be completed in this order.

Part 1: The NEEDS Assessment – $100

The NEEDS Assessment is a 130-question screening instrument. It is not a pass/fail test.

It evaluates your relationship with alcohol or drugs – helping your instructor understand where you’re starting from and tailoring the class experience accordingly.

You complete it online, from home, before your first class day. It takes 20–30 minutes.

Important: The NEEDS Assessment is not the same as a Clinical Evaluation or Drug and Alcohol Evaluation. Those are separate, state-mandated assessments for certain cases. If your court has ordered a clinical evaluation, that’s a different process entirely.

Part 2: The 20-Hour Intervention Class – $260

Once your NEEDS Assessment is complete, you attend the 20-hour class. It covers:

  • The effects of alcohol and drugs on driving
  • Georgia DUI law and legal consequences
  • Strategies for making safer choices behind the wheel
  • Alcohol, drug awareness, and peer group discussion

The class cannot be completed in one day. Most schedules run across three consecutive sessions.

The $260 fee covers the class and your required workbook.

How Much Does the Program Cost – and Why Is Every School the Same Price?

The total program fee is $360 – $100 for the NEEDS Assessment and $260 for the 20-hour class and book.

That price is set and mandated by the Georgia DDS. It is identical at every certified provider in Georgia. You won’t find it cheaper anywhere, because no school is legally permitted to charge less or more.

What differs between schools is everything else – scheduling flexibility, instructor quality, location convenience, and the experience they’ve built over time.

We’ve been serving Metro Atlanta since 2011 across seven locations, with over 1,300 five-star reviews from students who’ve been exactly where you are right now.

What Does the Class Schedule Look Like?

We offer three weekly scheduling options so you can fit the program around your job and family:

  • Weekday classes – Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
  • Weekend classes – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • Weeknight classes – Monday through Friday (offered twice monthly)

The 20-hour class runs across consecutive sessions – a typical schedule is Friday evening, all day Saturday, and all day Sunday.

Pick whichever format works for your week. If you’re unsure which upcoming date has availability, call us at 770-274-4223 and we’ll find a slot that works.

Should You Take the Class In-Person or on Zoom?

Both formats are DDS-certified and result in the exact same official certificate.

In-person classes are available at all seven of our Metro Atlanta locations – Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Lawrenceville, Marietta (East Cobb and West Cobb), Doraville, and Johns Creek.

Zoom classes are live, instructor-led sessions. Not pre-recorded videos. You attend in real time with a small group and a certified instructor.

The Zoom option is a strong choice if you’re outside Metro Atlanta, have a schedule that makes commuting difficult, or simply prefer learning from home.

Either way, the certificate carries the same weight with DDS and your court.

What Happens on Day 1 of Class?

Day 1 is the opening session of your 20-hour intervention class.

Your NEEDS Assessment should be completed before you arrive. If you registered online, you’ll have received instructions on how to complete it from home in advance. If you haven’t done it yet, contact us before your class date and we’ll guide you through the steps.

The class environment is small-group, calm, and judgment-free. Our instructors have worked with thousands of first-time offenders across all our locations. You’re not alone in that room – everyone there is working through the same requirement.

Show up ready to engage, and let our instructors handle the rest.

How Do You Receive Your Certificate?

After completing both the NEEDS Assessment and all 20 hours of class, the process is automatic.

Your official Georgia DDS Certificate of Completion is emailed to you by 5:30 PM the following day.

No DDS office visits. No paperwork to chase. Just check your inbox.

That certificate is what your attorney, your court clerk, and the DDS need to process your reinstatement. Keep the email – you may be asked to forward it as part of your case resolution.

What Comes After the Certificate?

The certificate proves you’ve satisfied the DUI Risk Reduction requirement for the DDS and your court.

Your specific next steps – reinstatement timelines, fines, probation conditions – depend on the details of your case. Your attorney is your best guide for those specifics.

If you’ve been told to complete the program quickly, prioritise booking your class date as soon as your NEEDS Assessment is done. Weekend slots fill fast, especially in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to complete the NEEDS Assessment before attending the class?

Yes – Georgia DDS requires the NEEDS Assessment to be completed before you can begin the 20-hour class. You complete it online, from home, at any time before your class starts. It takes about 20–30 minutes.

Can I take the DUI Risk Reduction Program on Zoom?

Yes. Our Zoom classes are live, instructor-led, and fully DDS-certified. You receive the same official certificate as in-person attendees. Choose the format that best fits your schedule and comfort level.

How long does the 20-hour class take to complete?

The class cannot be completed in a single day. Most students complete it across three consecutive sessions – typically a Friday evening, all day Saturday, and all day Sunday. Weekday and weeknight schedules are also available.

Is the DUI Risk Reduction Program the same as a Clinical Evaluation?

No – these are two separate requirements. The NEEDS Assessment is part of the DUI Risk Reduction Program. A Clinical Evaluation (sometimes called a Drug and Alcohol Evaluation) is a distinct, court-ordered assessment. If your case requires both, they’re completed separately.

How quickly will I receive my certificate after finishing the program?

Your DDS Certificate of Completion is emailed to you by 5:30 PM the day after you complete the program. There’s no waiting period and no office visit required.

Is the $360 fee the same at every DUI school in Georgia?

Yes. The total fee – $100 for the NEEDS Assessment and $260 for the class and book – is mandated by the Georgia Department of Driver Services. No certified school can charge more or less.
