Do You Take Your Road Test at a DDS Office?

No – not if you test with 1 ACT. Georgia gives you two paths to your road test: an appointment at a DDS Customer Service Center, or a Third-Party Testing (TPT) site certified to administer the same test on the state’s behalf. At our Alpharetta and Lawrenceville locations, that second option means you test in our vehicle, on our schedule, without ever booking a DDS appointment.

Where Does Your Georgia Road Test Actually Happen?

Most new drivers assume there’s only one option: book a slot at a DDS Customer Service Center, show up with a borrowed or family car, and wait for an available examiner. That path is real, and DDS runs it well – but it isn’t the only one.

Georgia’s Third-Party Testing Program lets DDS-certified driving schools administer the same road skills test their students would otherwise take at a state office. The examiner is a certified instructor who’s also a licensed third-party examiner, the vehicle is the school’s insured car, and the result – a passed or failed test – carries exactly the same weight as one taken at a DDS center. Nothing about the outcome is different. What changes is where you sit for it, and who’s sitting next to you.

How Does Third-Party Testing Work at 1 ACT?

Two of our seven Metro Atlanta locations are DDS-licensed TPT sites: Alpharetta (TPT #730) and Lawrenceville (TPT #000673). That’s it – Sandy Springs, both Marietta offices, Johns Creek, and Doraville aren’t testing locations, even though several of them offer everything leading up to the test. If your lessons happen at one of those five, your road test still takes place at Alpharetta or Lawrenceville.

The instructor who examines you is the same kind of certified professional you’d meet at a DDS office – just one who already knows your driving, because there’s a real chance they taught some of your lessons. You test in a car you may have already practiced in, at a location you’re already familiar with. That familiarity is the whole point of the program, and it’s why we built lessons and testing around the same two offices instead of spreading TPT thin across all seven.

What Do You Need Before You Can Book?

Third-party testing isn’t available to just anyone who shows up. Georgia sets the eligibility rules, and we enforce them the same way a DDS office would.

That last line trips people up the most. You can complete your 30-hour Driver’s Education course anywhere – including the self-paced online version – and it’ll still count. But the behind-the-wheel hours that qualify you for a 1 ACT road test have to be ours. If you drove with a different school, you’ll need to log at least 6 hours with us before we can put you on the TPT schedule.

What Actually Happens on Test Day?

Your appointment covers a few distinct steps: a vehicle safety check, a quick review of what’s about to happen, the drive itself, and the paperwork afterward. How long each part takes varies by student – some drives wrap up quickly, others run longer depending on traffic and how many maneuvers the examiner needs to see – so we won’t put a fixed number on it. What matters is that the driving portion is the part that’s actually scored; everything else is just getting you there and closing it out.

Before you drive, the examiner checks the vehicle – but since it’s our insured car, not one you had to source and insure yourself, this step is faster and one less thing for you to worry about. Once you’re on the road, they’re evaluating the fundamentals: backing up safely, stopping correctly for signs and signals, yielding right-of-way at intersections. None of it is designed to trick you. What Happens After You Pass?

This is the part that surprises people. Passing your test at 1 ACT doesn’t hand you a license on the spot – because a Third-Party Tester doesn’t issue driver’s licenses. DDS still does that.

What you get instead is a completion certificate from your examiner. You take that certificate, in person, to a DDS Customer Service Center along with your Class D or Class C license application. That’s the step where your actual license gets issued. It’s a separate stop, but it’s a short and simple one – you’re not repeating any part of the test, just closing the loop with the state.

Why Test at 1 ACT Instead of a DDS Office?

But testing with us tends to be faster to get on the calendar, and you’re not scrambling to find an insured car and a licensed adult to accompany you to a state office – you’re using ours. You’re also testing with someone who may already know your driving from lessons, rather than meeting your examiner for the first time on test day.

None of that changes what’s being tested. It just removes a few of the logistics that make road test day stressful in the first place.
